Adelaide prices at a glance

All prices include GST and are pre-rebate estimates — your quote depends on site conditions, brand and complexity.

System type Capacity Typical installed price REPS rebate
Small split 2–3 kW $1,200–$2,500 $300–$500
Medium split 3.5–5 kW $1,800–$3,500 $500–$800
Large split 7 kW+ $2,500–$4,500 $800+
Multi-head split 2–3 heads $4,200–$7,500+ Varies
Ducted (small) 5–7 kW $5,000–$8,000 $1,000+
Ducted (large) 8–14 kW $7,000–$14,000+ $1,000–$1,300+

Adelaide installs typically run about 10–15% above the eastern capitals because the licensed-technician pool is smaller.

What a proper install includes

When comparing quotes, make sure each one covers the same scope. A complete split-system install includes:

  • Indoor and outdoor units
  • Refrigerant copper pipework
  • A dedicated electrical circuit with RCD protection
  • Wall penetration and sealing
  • Condensate drainage
  • Outdoor unit mounting (pad or bracket)
  • R32 refrigerant charging, leak testing and commissioning
  • Pipe and cable capping for a tidy finish

If any of these are listed as “extras”, ask why before comparing on price.

What drives the price up or down

  • Wall construction. Bluestone and sandstone walls (common in Norwood, Unley and Prospect) are 300–400 mm thick; core drilling adds about $150–$300, and long pipe runs add cost per metre. Modern homes in newer suburbs are simpler and cheaper.
  • Switchboard capacity. Each split needs a dedicated circuit; a full board upgrade can add $1,500–$2,800.
  • Brand and model tier. The gap between an entry model and a premium one is roughly $500–$1,500 per unit.
  • Timing. September–November is peak demand and January heatwaves bring 4–6 week waits. Booking April–August usually means better availability and pricing.

Split vs ducted

Factor Split system Ducted system
Upfront cost $1,200–$4,500 per unit $5,000–$18,700+
Running cost Lower (single rooms) Higher (whole home)
Best for Individual rooms Whole-home comfort
Install time ~1 day per unit 2–4 days
REPS rebate $300–$800 $1,000–$1,300+

How the REPS rebate changes the price

The REPS rebate is applied as a direct discount on your quote — you don't pay full price and claim it back. Worked examples:

  • Bedroom split (2.5 kW): $2,400 installed − $400 REPS = $2,000.
  • Living-area split (5.0 kW): $3,100 installed − $600 REPS = $2,500.
  • Whole-home ducted (12 kW): $12,500 installed − $1,100 REPS = $11,400.
